Operation Foundation is a faith-based volunteer effort designed to address not only the physical needs of the community, but also the cultural and spiritual needs as well. It is a weeklong cleanup and restoration project focused primarily on the downtown and surrounding residential areas.
Each year, over 500 volunteers donate thousands of hours of their time during this weeklong event. With a population of about 4,500 people, this is a major undertaking, and has been an overwhelming success. Since 2007, over $1.2 million dollars worth of work has been completed within the City of Ligonier.
Because of this project, Ligonier became the first Good Works City in Indiana under the office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives. More information of this project can be found on their website: www.OperationFoundation.com.
Volunteers taking part in the Elkhart River cleanup included, from the back, Nic Weimer, Niles Butler, Wayne Lewis, Janelle Miller and Laura Miller. More than a ton of debris was pulled out of the waterway by the Operation Foundation volunteers.
